The best art has usually come from places of grief and violence. Artists are the light in those places, and their work is how that light travels out. To find the best art, you have to go where it is made, and face what surrounds it.
So whether it is woven pieces from the looms of Afghanistan and Iran, block prints from communities living through rebellion, the next great shawl in Kashmir, the most intricate embroidery in Baghdad or the finest tea cup in Damascus, it is my personal mission to find that art and bring it to the world.
The search begins with one workshop, in the Malwa region of central India. Its work is the first collection.
What we are building
Saracen Threads is a place to discover pieces from the workshops of the Near East and Asia. We begin with one collection and one country of delivery, the United Kingdom, and will add more only when we find pieces we can stand behind, described as plainly as this one.
The first collection
Five medallion panels, each in its own ground colour, made to hang on a wall from a pole through a sleeve sewn on the back. They are machine-woven pile, bound and finished by hand, and made to the measurements of your wall. Alongside them we sell counterpanes, printed by hand on cotton with carved wooden blocks.
Every piece is new and made to order after you pay. None is an antique, and we never describe one as such.
Who makes them
The panels are woven by households in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. Our family workshop there binds, finishes and packs each one, and it is the same workshop that answers for the quality of what we send.
How it reaches you
Orders join the week’s consignment, sealed in Malwa on Thursday evening, and travel by FedEx to your door in 6 to 10 days. We pay the import duties and taxes before the parcel arrives, so there is nothing to pay when it does. Shipping and delivery
