How to measure your wall
Four steps and a tape measure. Ten minutes, and you will know which size to choose, or what to type in.
1. Measure the wall
Measure the width of the wall, or of the alcove, and the height from the skirting board to the ceiling, cornice or picture rail.
2. Leave room around it
A panel looks settled with at least 20 cm of bare wall either side, and 20 to 30 cm clear above whatever stands beneath it.
3. Mark it out
Put masking tape on the wall at the size you are considering and live with it for a day. It is the quickest way to be sure.
4. Give us your measurements
On the piece’s page the size starts at the full piece. Type your width and drop, or tap a well-known size and adjust it, and confirm them before you add it to your basket.
What it costs
| Your measurements | Cut from | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 152 × 203 cm | The 5 × 7 ft piece, £399 | behind the bed, up the stairs |
Each panel is cut from the smallest piece that holds your measurements, and priced as that piece. We make it no smaller than 60 cm each way, and to no less than half the area of the piece it is cut from. The edge is bound by hand, which can add up to two days at the finishing table.
Measure twice. A panel made to your measurements is made to your specification, so once work begins, 24 hours after you pay, it cannot be cancelled for a change of mind. If it arrives faulty or not as described, your rights are unaffected. Your rights
Hanging it
A cotton sleeve is sewn across the back of the top edge. A curtain pole slides through it, so nothing is nailed through the weaving. A 28 mm wooden pole and a pair of brackets from any hardware shop will carry it; buy the pole at least 20 cm longer than the panel is wide, so the brackets sit outside it. The full-size panel weighs about 6 kg.
Brick or block
Drill with a masonry bit and use the wall plugs that come with the brackets.
Plasterboard
Screw into the timber studs where you can find them. Between studs, use metal cavity fixings rated for the weight, never plastic plugs on their own.
Lath and plaster
Common in older houses. Find the timber battens behind the plaster and fix into those; the plaster alone will not hold a screw.
If you would rather not, a handyman will put up a pole in twenty minutes.
